Honed and filled finishes are NOT recommended for oolite due to its highly porous nature and large natural voids. Saw cut unfilled is the only appropriate finish. All pieces cut to order: approx. 30-day lead time.
Sealing Options
Oolite is a highly porous stone with two distinctly different maintenance approaches, each producing a different aesthetic result:
Sealed: Applying Dry Treat 40SK or a similar penetrating sealer will protect the stone from staining and maintain a more consistent color. The sealed stone retains its original installed appearance with regular maintenance.
Unsealed (Patina): Left unsealed, oolite will naturally develop a rich patina over time as it weathers and absorbs environmental minerals. This develops the highly sought-after "Old Castle" or "Old World" look that many clients specifically desire.
Many clients intentionally leave oolite unsealed to achieve its natural patina character. Contact us to discuss which approach is best for your project.
Architectural Applications
Sunshine Oolite is prized for its deeply authentic, historical character. Formed millions of years ago through the compression of tiny spherical carbonate grains (ooids) in ancient shallow seas, it is a stone that carries genuine geological history in every surface.
The material is most commonly used for pool copings, exterior patios, garden features, entry features, column bases and wall cladding where its distinctive porous texture and ability to develop a natural patina are considered desirable qualities.
